Yellow Perch
Average Catch: 8 to 10
inches Hot Spots: Shallow bays, creek mouths,
marshes Profile: New York's perch is an
angler's delight. They typically run eight to ten
inches, but some jumbo perch are the rule in some parts
of the river. There is great ice fishing for perch in
the St. Lawrence, with bucket-filling catches common
throughout the winter. |
Muskellunge
Average Catch: Up to 35 lbs. Hot
Spots: Late June: shallow weedbeds,
Aug-Sept: near drop-offs Profile: New York is
a top muskellunge state. The fish average 12 to 30
pounds and an occasional 40- to 50-pound tackle-buster
is taken. Special fishing gear is needed to land this
wily fish. A guide is strongly recommended. |

Brook Trout
Average Catch: 7 to 13
inches Hot Spots: undercut banks, beneath tree
limbs
or under large rock ledges. Profile: Brook
trout weighing over one pound are considered a trophy
since life expectancy is seldom longer than 3 years. The
diet of brook trout includes
fish, small crayfish, snails, as well as insects,
both terrestrial and aquatic. |
Northern Pike
Average Catch: Up to 12 lbs. Hot
Spots: All year: shallow bays and marshes
Profile: Vicious strikes are their trademark. Use
large spoons, plugs, spinners or live bait and hold on,
because Northern grow big and mean in New York.
A number of fish from 15 to 20 pounds are
caught each year in the St. Lawrence. |

Smallmouth Bass
Average Catch: Up to six
pounds Hot Spots: Around islands, off islands,
in bays Profile: Tough, rod-bending fish. One-
to two-pound smallmouths are abundant, two- to
three-pound fish are common, and six- to eight-pound
trophies are not uncommon. Fish shallow in spring and
fall, move deeper in mid-summer months.

Largemouth Bass
Average Catch: Up to six pounds Hot
Spots: Around islands, off islands, in bays
Profile: Tough, rod-bending fish. One- to two-pound
largemouths are abundant, two- to three-pound fish
are common, and six- to eight-pound trophies are
not uncommon. Fish shallow in spring and fall,
move deeper in mid-summer months. |

Walleye
Average Catch: Up to 10
lbs. Hot Spots: Spring/Fall: inshore shallows,
Summer: deeper shoals Profile: The walleye is
a popular gamefish known for its delicate, delicious
flavor and light-tackle fight. Five- to ten-pounders are
common and trophies have been
known to be as much as 18 pounds.
Ice fishing makes for great walleye action all winter
long. |
Rainbow Trout
Average Catch: 6 to 16 inches Hot Spots:
Young rainbow trout seek
cover and prefer slow-moving shallow stream areas where
rubble, rocks, instream debris and undercut banks
provide shelter. Older trout move into faster and deeper
stream waters.
Profile: A popular
sportfish, rainbow trout is fished with wet and dry
flies, lures or natural bait. |
